Wall Street Greek's Week Ahead – Economic Reports & EPS Schedule

The week ahead carries with it the weight of the previous period. The market closed poorly last week, despite a strong February. The reason was two-fold and had domestic and international elements, just as the week ahead does. The Greek tragedy was dragged out to a dramatic midnight hour approval on Friday, as the Greeks almost did themselves in by disproving their own Finance Minister’s coupe. However, as I suggested would happen last week, fear of the unknown and the likelihood of a Greek depression worse than the crisis of its last few years should it have exited the euro-zone, led the Greeks back to their senses. They approved the new program, and the ECB is expected this week to reverse some of the actions it took against Greece as tensions rose. This should release some critical tension for Greek stocks (Nasdaq: GREK) and for global markets this week. In the U.S., after last week’s soft GDP data and an ugly Midwestern measure showing contraction, we get the monthly Employment Situation Report this Friday. All eyes will be on data this week for evidence of Q1 softness. The market needs confirmation that things are okay to grow, so pay attention. Please do follow our Wall Street blog.

Stocks took a hit at the close of the week when GDP was reported growing at a slower rate and Chicago PMI showed contraction in the Midwest economy. Weakness was attributed to the weather and the West Coast port issues, but I expect lower energy prices are also hampering the center of the country, where a great deal of the nation’s newest drill-holes are found. This raised concern that the current quarter could show a contraction similar to the one reported last winter. That would seem to put the Fed on hold, but for good reason. As a result, the market will hinge on events in Europe and also on the data schedule found below here. All of the data is important, especially Monday’s spending data, but everything will hinge on Friday’s jobs report.
